The sign of Cancer probably originated in Ancient Egypt, where the constellation was first known as the sign of the Stars of the Water and later as the Two Turtles (river turtles are found in the Nile and have a hard shell, like that of a crab). In Ancient Babylon, the sign was known not only as Al. lul, a water creature - “the wicked or rebellious one” - but also as bulug, the Crab or Crayfish. Much later, the Ancient Greeks named it the Tortoise.

The labors of Hercules

Of all the Zodiac signs, this constellation is perhaps the least

made is with one of the 12 labors that the hero Hercules was made to perform by King Eurystheus, the ruler of Greece, after he had murdered his own wife and children.

The second labor consisted of the destruction of the Hydra, a monster specially reared by the goddess Hera to fight him. It had the body of a dog, and nine snaky heads - one of which was immortal. Furthermore, its breath was so poisonous that anyone unfortunate

near Lerna in the Peloponnese, it would embark on great orgies of destruetion and killing, devastating innumerable herds and crops.

Hercules battles the Hydra

Hercules forced the Hydra to leave its marsh by showering the beast in flaming arrows. At first his task seemed impossible; every time he struck off one of the monster’s heads, two more grew in its place. Moreover, when Hercules eventually seemed to be gaining an advantage in his battle with the Hydra, I lera sent a great crab to help out, which it did by attacking the hero's foot. In the end, however, Hercules succeeded in stamping on it. disposing of it for good. Nevertheless, Hera was so grateful for the crab’s assistance that she set it among the stars in a constellation of its own, which we call Cancer. Hercules went on to kill the Hydra by burning off its mortal heads with a red-hot branding iron, before slicing off its immortal head.

The characteristics of a crab can often be seen in people associated with this sign. Cancerians usually have a brittle protective shell, evident in an exterior gruffness; but this shell usually conceals a caring personality.
