Hello everyone and welcome to this astrology course with me Mark flattie.
And in this course in this series of classes we're going to go a bit deeper into Natal astrology is
very much a follow on from the introduction to astrology course is also available for myself which really
introduced the important features of an astrology charts of the charter itself what it looks like and
the all of the important features such as the planets the houses the signs and the aspects you know
the full building blocks of astrology.
So this course really assumes some basic knowledge of those.
And it's going to build on them and go more deeply into the chart and really start to put some of the
building blocks together at the moment.
We have these separate elements.
You know we know what a Mercury was the sun or the moon means on its own and the wall fire as an element
relates to the conjunction or a square aspect.
For example mean on their own I'm going to start putting some of those things together.
And in this first few classes I get to focus on the sun and the moon because they're really the core
of a Chawton the core of a person persons personality if you like an old so that life and the kind of
things that happen in life challenges and so just by understanding the sun and the moon deeply in the
charts you can understand a lot about yourself and somebody else in your life.
And you know you don't have to want to become an astrologer to get a lot of value out of this course.
There's even just a basic understanding can really help
with what I consider to be fundamental importance of astrology which is of self-knowledge and self-understanding.
I'm just giving a tool for helping us to navigate this crazy rollercoaster called life and to hopefully
get deeper understanding into ourselves on Natrium why things happen and be able to bring out the higher
side of wall charts potential shows and not get stuck in in some of the low behaviors of it.
So as I say just understanding the sun and moon alone can can go a really long way to understanding
the core of a chore.
So this is really the perfect place to start going more deeply into the charts.
And I'm going to begin with the moon and look at the sunlight.
I'm doing it in this order basically because it is kind of chronological if you like.
The moon is the moon comes first in our lives and then and then we develop the sun as we grow.
And as you can see on the screen it says elements and aspects.
So when talking about the moon one good luck that is first of all a little reminder of the basic symbolism
of the moon in our lives.
What it shows what it relates to and then start to get more deeply into its nature by first looking
at the moon behaves the different elements of the and water and then look at some of the main aspects
to the moon.
And if you remember aspects of basically the the angles between the planets in the jaw and depending
on what those angles are show where two planets connect closely and so their symbolism then becomes
an important part of our lives and especially when related to either the sun or the moon I'm going to
focus almost entirely on what I call the Haught aspects which are the challenging aspects the things
that bring difficulties in our lives because that's the stuff that we really need more understanding
about the easy aspects are the soft aspects as I sometimes called they.
Sort of natural talents and abilities.
You know this stuff is just inmates in nature and our behavior.
So aren't quite as important to know about the hard aspects Anyway I'll get into more about that later
on.
But first let's start with a quick reminder about the moon.
And there it is.
As a quick reminder about what it looks like just in case you've forgotten as the moon there we go.
And so the moon is out.
It symbolizes our feelings and our instincts.
It's our emotional nature.
You can't say.
And it's really while the sun the sun changes in our life path is about becoming more fully ourselves
through constantly learning and growing through the sun the moon nature isn't really like that.
It's more about you know basic basic feelings instincts innate nature.
That doesn't really change through our lives.
You know it's it's more the domain of basic emotional and bodily needs are the domain of material reality.
And I've started with the moon because the moon is really what we meet first in our life because it's
related to our mother and it is how we saw or experienced when growing up and maybe how we see and experience
still today.
And so the mother is the symbol of nurturing and being nurtured.
So something about our moon nature what the moon shows in the chart describes how we like to be nurtured
and also how we do tiring ourselves.
It's the image of the feminine nature in life so you know you could relate the moon to yin in the yin
yang polarity in terms of being not sort of receptive to feeling emotional nurturing side of ourselves.
We all relate to the feminine in some way.
And so it shows what we what we need to feel comfortable like sensually and secure the comfort and security
are two key words with the moon because it relates to our childhood conditioning and early domestic
life.
So so taken as a whole or all they essentially say's it's what we come into life and what we experience
very early on in our life.
And that comes in some way through our connection in relation to our mother or mother figure if our
mother isn't around when we're very young.
And so if you think about the role of the mother in a very young infant's life then it is all about
the sense of nurturing and completely taking care of the child everything that she needs.
And so so that then becomes as we grow into an adult the new nature then shows and natural inclinations
and tendencies based on these childhood conditioning for what we need to feel safe and secure and comfortable
and how we naturally respond to life according to according to the science nature of the moon in terms
of the House and the moon is situated in.
Remember the houses or the different areas of life life experience and so the House that the moon is
in really shows something about what we need to feel emotionally safe and secure something about you
know where we where we gain comfort and a sense of security and belonging even.
So imagine if the moon is in the house which is the house of Korea and our place in the world at large
that's going to show somebody who takes a great deal of emotional satisfaction and comfort through the
work that they do well through that place in society somehow.
And somebody with the moon in the 11th Pius which is all about sort of group Hadnagy the collective
it's somebody who's going to need social contacts to be around other people to really feel like they
belong to.
To get in touch with that sense of sort of being cared for and nurtured that came sort of carried over
from early childhood on.
And the relationship with the mother.
Whereas say somebody with the moon in the 2005 switch is more reclusive is going to show somebody who
actually needs time alone to withdraw from the world and solitude in order to in order to feel comfortable
in order to feel that nurturing themselves which is essentially what we need to do when we become adults.
So let's get into some details.
This is all a little bit vague at the moment because we haven't in any other elements to contact with
the moon so.
So let's start by looking at how the moon operates in the in the four elements of fire earth air and
water.
That the elements are really important because well first of all they're just a great way to start learning
about the different signs.
You know the 12 signs of the zodiac but there's only four elements and so each of the elements has three
signs of the zodiac that makes sense.
So so for instance 5 is Aries Leo and Sagittarius earth these Taurus Capricorn and Virgo average Gemini
Libra and Aquarius and water is cancel school piano and Pisces.
So you've got 12 signs of the zodiac there which which can be a bit daunting place to start trying to
understand the difference between them all.
But actually if you just start with the four elements there's those three planets that are grouped by
that by the element that they relate to have something in common.
You know all of the fire signs have something in common.
All of the signs up something in common et cetera.
So by understanding deeply the different elements and there's only four of them so it's much easier
than understanding the 12 signs.
You can really start to get a feel for that differences and then really start to understand a lot about
what a planet in that element is looking for to fulfill its needs which essentially is what all of the
planets in the chart are looking to do.
You know they're all looking to fulfill that need which is shown by their situation in the Charle and
there's a lot of different planets in that John.
And that's why human beings are so complex and so contradictory often because because ultimately there's
all these competing needs or characters in our life as shown by the different planets are sometimes
in balance and in harmony and sometimes pulling against each other and all of this can be shown by the
astrology chart.
So by looking first at the moon by elements you can start to get an idea of how the planet functions
that remember the Looney's its early experiences in life.
So it shapes us on a very deep level and so shows what we need or how our life needs to be in order
to feel like our emotional nature.
And this really deep feeling innate instinctive side of our being is is being looked after.
So let's start with fire and
everybody with moving in fire has an element of heat and passion about them.
You know the sense of Fire is a need to be special.
Actually you know it's mythologically you could say it's a need to be acknowledged as a child of God.
Does that there's a sense of the extraordinary or exceptional that everybody that has moved in fire
in some way feels you know there's almost a sense of
feeling exempt you could say from the the ordinary limits of mortal life which which is kind of a grand
way of saying it but hopefully hopefully captures the essence of a sense that there's this innate or
deep need that can't be reasoned away light like all Moon Features.
There's no sort of reason or logical intellect or practicality often involved with where our moon is.
It's all about this just call instinct.
The we may not even know where it comes from but we can't deny it.
So people with a moon in fire often have this really potent imagination and rich in a world in some
way which which hopefully gets expressed through through some kind of creative activity you know just
because the moon is in fire doesn't mean that all of these things will happen.
Thought depends to a large degree on the house scene and the aspects but the what the mood in fire really
wants and needs is this is to do something great in a way.
It's it's the sense of wanting to be special and also needing a sense of meaning in life.
It is all three is an instinctual sludged that to bring.
Some think you could say larger than life.
The nature of fire is is the desire to be part of something larger and more significant.
You could say in the ordinary world the mood in Faya people bottom line they need excitement and adventure.
An ordinary normal life is just well let's say a quiet life is unfulfilling actually.
And of course again how easy this gets expressed by a person depends entirely on the chart as a whole.
And this is something you'll probably hear me say a lot through through my classes but really can't
be repeated enough.
Is that a single elemental feature of a chart really depends on on everything else to see how well or
how easily or even if at all it gets expressed.
But that single feature there's a desire that a moving fire there's a desire for a sense of specialness
and meaning and adventure.
It doesn't necessarily mean it will happen for some people it will be much easier to express than others
and it is really one of the challenges of teaching and also learning astrology is you have to learn
piecemeal you have to understand the building blocks one by one but also hold in your mind that the
whole of the rest of the chart always has to be taken into account.
And so no one thing that I will say will necessarily on its own be expressed in a person's life.
You do have to take in the greater context to understand it fully.
Nevertheless it is true that all people with mood and fire instinctively have this sort of radiant creative
energy that
brings this great sense of emotional fulfillment if it can be expressed in some way.
Fire is a very excitable energy and
can bring great frustration actually if the you know for instance there's there's a lot of hard aspects
to the moon that prevent it from being expressed.
The moon doesn't get what it wants always when this hot aspects to it and so when the moon in fire that
can bring a lot of frustration or anger or just just all these pent up energy that is very powerful
and incredibly creative.
But on the flip side can also be very destructive if it doesn't have an outlet.
The mood enough on the other hand is a bit more tranquilo.
It's a bit karma.
It's a bit more sedates as if suggests that this is the realm of the physical world.
And so when a person has the moon in an earth sign which is again Taurus Virgo or Capricorn then it's
the body that's of great importance.
Instinctively anyone with moon you know he's well in touch with the physical world if you like.
You know it's all about us all about the five senses.
And so we talk about the body and that is the physical body.
But equally it could be the whole room.
It's like a physical home where we live is almost like a surrogate physical body if you like it's it's
another womb for a century.
And so the physical home can be very important and so moving home is one thing that can be very difficult
for somebody with a moon in earth sign especially the moon in Taurus.
You know Taurus is notoriously disliking of change horses light the Taurus energy is all about keeping
things the same.
And I know that that goes for all the signs actually and resistance to change.
And
daily routines are usually very important for moving you know earth signs to there's a certain sense
of emotional security that's found in routine and repetitive actions.
It brings a sense of stability.
Moon in Virgo people are especially attuned to daily routines and having things like a sense of order
or well-being that comes from just taking care of the little things and having everything in that sort
of immediate physical environment nicely under water.
Resistance to change I mentioned especially in terms of Taurus but all the signs
the enough people gain their sense of security from the physical world around them.
And so it can be especially difficult to deal with change because of it sort of upsets the balance if
you like and upsets the emotional nature.
The other thing about these it is the physical material world.
And so often Mouni enough people will gain a sense of security and safety through material things through
money through nice possessions.
Even somebody who's very intellectual or spiritual for that matter will need to take care of the material
side of life.
And it's especially true for moon and earth people that there's a sense of grounded ness that comes
from it.
And as with everything.
Balance is key.
And so that danger can be a moon you know a person taking this too far and hoarding money or hoarding
possessions having a lot of stuff because on some level it satisfies them emotionally and when taken
to that degree can come from a place of fear or stagnation and then it's not so healthy.
It's always balance.
So moody enough person needs to take care of the finances if they ignore them something that they're
not responding to.
Moon You know something in them is going to be a little bit agitated by it at the other end of the spectrum
if that gets taken too far.
It's equally unhelpful.
I'm with the Earth being the physical world and the physical body.
Physical illness can come from mood.
You know people when when their emotions on well taken care of when they're are out of balance on that
level it it's more easily reflected in the physical body than than say somebody with the natural Moonfire
need to feel useful they say is a big one for moon to earth is a by physical reality so it's about doing
something tangible.
And so there's a great need for any body with the moon in this element to be of practical real world
use in some way.
That is a real great sense of emotional satisfaction that comes from from being productive and doing
something helpful or that contributes to life in some way.
It's all about money fasting something in the physical world.
And the final thing to say about the moon is the need for touch and physical affection.
Again it comes back to this being related to the sense of the body and the moody Nothe might show it
might show some thing.
Remember here it's related to our early upbringing and relationship to our mother.
And so somebody with Moon and Earth it will be a sense of physical touch and nurturing on the bottle
level is especially important.
So so when you expand out your study of the moon to seeing what aspects it makes to the chart then if
you see some some heavy difficult aspects in that for instance a square a certain way which I'm going
to cover later I'm not going to go into the detail about now other than to say that would show a real
challenge and difficulty in expressing the moon nature if it could show somebody who was really craving
physical affection but didn't get it for some reason.
And then if that's happened for Moon an earth sign could be somebody who grows up with a sense of shame
about the physical body or some kind of issue there in terms of not being in touch with that body as
much as they need to which is you know especially important for a moon you know earth person.
And also it's worth remembering for anyone who is on a spiritual path for want of a better phrase you
still have to take care of your body when your moon is in this and this element especially can seem
less important.
The physical world to to your ideas or your sense of spirituality.
Put the moon in earth you remember the moon is not a buy it's not goal oriented it just once it needs
to be met and Luling earth is always a need for security and comfort on the physical level.
And so I ignore that at your peril.
So let's move on now to the moon and remember the signs are Gemini Libra and Aquarius and so air is
all about communication the mind the intellect social connections.
And you know while the sun the sun is all about striving so the sun in that last sign is really going
for chasing after in a way intellectual development.
The moon is our needs and it just needs contact.
Basically it needs communication with others.
It just needs verbal contact all mental stimulation.
You might find Mouni that people are the kind of people that are always on the telephone.
They love.
They love a good gossip.
They love a good natter and it's that sense of exchanging information that brings a really deep sense
of connection and comfort.
So mental stimulation I mentioned it's all about just sharing and exchanging ideas for the just for
the love of it not not trying to get anywhere just the sense of Aeris interaction and exchange a mood
any day needs on a on a deep level and so that in some way or another that we're social creatures aside
from Mouni that person the sense of communication when growing up you know in childhood is especially
important.
I remember the moon in what was important was the physical contact of the moon in Aries.
Heigho.
How did the parents communicate.
How was the exchange of information within the family.
And so that was restricted they thought was a household that wasn't open in communication or if the
child received different messages from different parents for example then it becomes more difficult
for them because it hinders that ability to express and to really get in touch with the moon's deep
need for for the sharing of ideas and just the mental intellectual communication
where people need space as well the moon while it while it's all about our relationship with our mother
and our early childhood that then gets reflected in Iowa adult life in what we need to feel safe and
secure and to feel comfortable and so in all interactions there's this desire for interaction but also
the need to maintain a certain degree of space as well and I guess it's it's most clearly seen in romantic
relationships because that's where all of our buttons really get press that's where everything that's
been hiding really becomes obvious because it's such an intense experience.
So money that person will was the plenty of space in a relationship and there's also a danger from muny
that person of intellectualising feelings or emotions because you have this combination here which is
the moon is the feeling nature but is more intellectual mind based.
And so these these two these two sides of a nature kind of come together with this place.
So while I'm find with the moon that person is somebody he kind of dislikes messy emotions and tries
to avoid them wherever possible.
And people don't tend to thrive on complex emotional dynamics.
They need contact.
Of course they hate isolation but powerful overwhelming feelings no easy for a Moonie now person to
deal with.
What can happen if things get a bit too heavy on the emotional side is for the money now person a sense
of dissociation a sense of
analyzing away feelings.
Not really not really staying with just the feeling nature and getting in touch with the feelings but
trying to explain them rationally coming up with a story about them and maybe just talking about their
feelings rather than you know being a bit disconnected from the actual sensations and more in the realm
of the what the mind thinks about them.
And the final thing to say about an immunity to people is a need for clarity.
So so again this explains why the feeling emotional side of life isn't isn't really the Forte or comfortable
ground for a moon person because there's nothing less Klea more ambiguous than than the realm of people's
feelings and emotions and so in that search for clarity a that person could well retreat into the mind.
Think about the situation rather than just feeling it.
And while they might find a sense of security in the realm of ideas and understandings about life it
is really important one of the key things really from moving that person is to allow themselves to to
just feel and not have to explain away a situation just to just be in it.
There's a certain degree of idealism that comes with this placement and sometimes sometimes this desire
to stay in the realm of the mind and ideas is is a way of way of not letting the reality of a situation
which is almost always a less than perfect from the mine's perspective from not sort of intrude on and
destroy a sense of idealism.
So if you have any now or know somebody with it watch out for any sense of detachment dissociation.
Yes the person or you whoever it may be needs needs a sense of space needs their own sense of separateness
the water that we're going to come onto it's all about sort of merging and fusing areas by keeping separate
in some way which is fine in and of itself.
But the danger comes when where the just the of feeling emotional nature of life is ignored at expense
of our ideas and thoughts about them.
OK on the fourth and final element is not of water which is I guess you could say well in a way the
moon is especially because the moon is a watery emotional planet.
And so anybody with the moon in water is going to be particularly sensitive.
And what this person needs to feel safe and secure and in touch with that deep innate nature is emotional
connection with people.
You know it's kind of a simple as lights it's just need to connect on an emotional level in a way.
You could even say that any response is better than no response anger hatred or whatever.
If it's stimulated in another person at least it's something at least as a connection at least one's
feelings on being ignored.
In an ideal world obviously wouldn't be a connection or a response based on anger or hatred for a mood
in a person.
What matters is the emotional response
from him was a person that's all about the exchange of feelings and emotions and in doing so drawing
oneself together with another water.
As I said just at the end of the mooning section is all about merging areas keeping things separate.
But water is where we merge with others feelings feelings break down barriers between ourselves and
other people ourselves and the world.
And so they need to merge from mood and water person really comes from a desire to no longer feel separates
or no longer feel alone.
If such a person isn't getting an emotional response from their mother or from a partner from anyone
important in that life then then there's nothing worse.
It's almost like a sense that they don't exist.
The sense of safety and security comes from that deep emotional connection which which to them is is
emerging in the intensity of feelings that these people have for somebody else.
A movie and as a person for example they may come across sometimes as being hysterical.
But I'm socially imbalance even and maybe they are but.
But more likely they just feel more intensely that more connected to changing feelings and they just
need to express them as they are rather than trying to rationalize them.
And so mooning was a person with really no relationship will need to be with somebody who is emotionally
responsive that they need that that reassurance I suppose you could say maybe even looking for approval
from another person but of course what's really important is a sense of self approval of being ok in
and of yourself rather than looking for validation from another which which can be more prevalent for
somebody with moving in water and that can lead to one of the lower behaviors that you can see with
this placement.
Is it someone who's manipulative you know this is very much the lower expression or the moon in water.
Manipulative basically looking to get that emotional connection and being taken care of on that that
feeling level.
But pretty much always if you see that kind of behavior it really stems from the person not giving themselves
what they need which as we all know always has to come from the south.
Can you can't go looking for somebody else to complete you when you can.
But it's it's probably not going to be pretty.
At some point you have a tendency to went well.
And so one of the traps of moving water a person could get into is acting in a manipulative way which
can be quite subtle.
It doesn't have to be of manipulation but can can be almost kind of passive aggressive because waterbottle
people don't tend to be so direct or so overtly aggressive but that could be a bit of emotional manipulation
going on there and what would happen if the other person would most likely get resentful back away in
some way and so it doesn't really help in the long run.
So you could say neediness is another of the lower expressions of mood in water if that person's mother
didn't give them the emotional nurturing that they that they needed that strong emotional connection
when younger than than they might they might grow up quite needy and emotionally dependent on somebody
else.
People fail these things even if they're not consciously aware of it.
Well actually a lot more sensitive to what's going on than than a lot of people realize and so somebody
somebody coming at you with a sense of emotional neediness as a moving water person might unconsciously
and more often than not the other person is going to feel uneasy.
You know it's not pleasant times to push other people away.
Has the opposite effect to what we want.
And so the bottom line really is valuing one's own feelings it's enjoying and appreciating your own
emotional nature.
Very important.
You can't go looking for it for someone else.
But what will almost certainly happen is when you're deeply connected as a moving water person to your
own feelings and you will you able to stay with them even if it's a bit of a rollercoaster ride.
Sometimes that chances are somebody will show up who is well attuned to your nature and will be able
to support you within that without you sucking their energy and draining them and what a person has
to give themselves the sense of unconditional love self-acceptance self forgiveness and as long as they
can do that then it's all good.
As soon as the there's a need for external approval that's when things get tricky for the moving water
types.
So that's a little introduction to a bit more about the.
Nature started to go more deeply into it and we're going to continue that in the next class by really
getting into some more.
Some of the more meaty stuff the moody and hard aspects to the different planets because this is really
getting to the core of some of the big challenges and some of the issues that are really at the heart
of our lives and at the heart of our deeper feeling emotional nature and so once we start bringing in
some of these aspects then the essence of the moon and what it shows in a child is going to it's going
to become a bit clearer.
And the symbolism will get be a bit richer and a bit deeper and I bring in some examples that really
start to illustrate what's going on with the moon.
