So welcome everybody to this class on the moon.
And looking at the aspects on specifically the hard aspects to the moon when it comes to aspects every
aspect means something can a chart you know the primary way of dividing them up really is between what
you can call hard too hard and soft aspects the soft or easy aspects or the sextile the Trine and the
some conjunctions not all conjunctions but some conjunctions.
The soft aspects are such a big deal because they generally relate to some innate talent or abilities
not some something we have to strive to overcome like the hard aspects on and that's why I focus more
on the hard aspects and that's why it's important to deal with them here first and foremost.
First a quick reminder about the aspects that we're going to be looking at.
The first one is the conjunction of an example of which you can see on screen here you've got the moon
right here 16 degrees of such terrorists and you've got Uranus at 13 degrees of Sagittarius so they
are considered to be conjunct as they're not right next to each other.
And remember that there's a certain degree of tolerance also known as orbs that come in with aspects
which means that they don't have to be exact.
In this case these two planets are three degrees apart.
And generally speaking you can say for the hard aspects that we going to look at here the conjunction
the squaring off position you can have the planets be up to eight degrees from exact and that is still
classed as relevant and important.
Here we have the square which is a 90 degree aspect.
And here you can see an example of Sun square Saturn here Saturn.
Nine degrees of Scorpio on the sun nine degrees of Aquarius.
So in this case it is an exact aspect and the closer they are together the stronger the effect.
The more important the aspect is if these two planets were seven degrees off being exact.
For example it would still be relevant and it would still be important but the closer they are together
the more prominent that aspect becomes and the more powerful it becomes in a chore in a person's life.
By the way as I'm sure you've gathered this this chart on screen here that I'm showing is I've taken
out all of the other planets I've just left the sun and Saturn just for ease of describing the nature
of the aspect obviously you'd never see a chart like this.
That would be all of the other planets in there.
But just for simplicity's sake here I removed them.
And the final one is the opposition the final one of the hot aspects.
And see here you see the sun at 12 degrees of Gemini exactly opposite almost exactly opposite Neptune
which is 10 degrees of Sagittarius.
So that two degrees is a two degree orb which makes you a very strong and prominent aspect.
Hopefully you're already aware of this but I'll just quickly remind you as well how you read these symbols
on a chart.
So the planet is a was on the outside of the circle here that's Neptune.
And then as you go inwards you have the degree of 10 degrees followed by the sign of the zodiac here
Sagittarius and then the minute.
So 21 which is the fraction of a degree and the minutes and the minutes on a clock the they go up to
60.
So you have basically that's 10 to one third degree more or less and that if a planet is retrograde
you see with this little retrograde symbol which we're not going to get into the detail of right now
so.
So that's just a reminder of the the three hot aspects that we're going to be lucky not in relation
to the moon.
Sometimes you might see why you're looking at a chart that aspect lines are shown in this middle portion.
So you might see a line in this case it would be a red line going directly across here in between the
two planets which is one way of symbolizing and showing the chart.
But for me my personal preference is to keep so much information and symbols and everything on that
chart.
I like to keep it simple and clear as possible.
And so anything that isn't necessary I take out and so I take those lines out.
And what that means is when you're looking for prospects then you need to you need to start getting
your mind tuned to spotting them.
And so you know the place that you always start is that degree of the sign.
So if you're looking for aspects to the Sun 12 degrees you know that any planet that's square rates
will be a 12 degrees or within eight degrees of either side.
So you can say between four and 20 degrees of of a sign that is square to the one that the sun is in.
So the sun is in Gemini and so you need to go through signs right away.
You remember each sign is 30 degrees.
So the 90 degree aspect is three signs away which is Gemini you go one can cancer to Leo 3 Virgo or
the other way round and you get to Pisces.
So any planet that seems Gemini is going to bein square from the sign Virgo will Pisces and all positions
easier because these data are present in this case Sagittarius.
So as you start to look at the full aspects in a chart you know I think personally I think it's more
helpful not to have the lines in there because it really a choose your mind to be able to spot them
for yourself.
And what do you have a full chart and you have all the lines in the middle.
It just gets a bit messy and it's kind of hard to see what's going on.
So I feel it's much better to be able to spot these aspects of yourself and it takes practice.
It takes you if you really want to get into this and really start looking for the aspects then it takes
time of just studying a chore.
I'm looking out for them and I'm looking to spot them.
If you're not interested in doing it if it's just more casually one look of the aspects then if you
have a computer program you saw a file which is great it does pretty much everything for you.
And why this child is taken from.
If you start looking at charts and you using Soulfire then you can get it to produce an aspect grade
for you listing all the aspects and showing you exactly which plana is not subject to to each other.
It's an easier way it's a personal preference and just something to bear in mind if you're looking to
get more deeply into this.
OK.
So in terms of the hard aspects to the moon the most important one is all the planets Toddy's to Saturn
Uranus and Neptune and Pluto these these outer planets all show major life themes or issues like say
all aspects are important but I like to start keeping as simple as possible really by really highlighting
the most important ones and then you know at a later date you can look at the aspects that have the
lesser importance so that's why we start in on the hard aspects and I'm going to focus predominantly
on those outer planets.
But I will for the sake of completion briefly mention first of all the hard aspects to the other planets
Mercury Venus Mars and Jupiter.
I'm not going to spend as much time on them because they're not as important but I will start with them
and briefly mention some of the themes that those aspects show but do remember I do bear in mind that
it's the real meaty ones or the the outer planets the aspects to Saturn Uranus and Neptune and Pluto.
So the aspects to the moon show some think about how we experience Star mother in a wider context.
Lee bringing childhood experiences and conditioning an early experience of life which then obviously
is a really important knock on effect into our adult lives into our adult lives in relation to our sense
of emotional safety and security which affects everything in our life.
But particularly can be seen to play a role in our romantic lives because there's something about our
first relationship which is without mother.
Somehow it gets carried on and seems to come up as themes in our intimate relationships in our adult
life.
So first of all briefly we're going to look at the Moon Mercury aspects and when it comes to hard aspects
here we have the square and the opposition hopefully the symbolism means something to you but if not
it will over time.
This is how you how you denote an aspect you got Moon Heia square aspect kind of self-explanatory.
And then they say is Mercury.
And over here we've got the Moon opposite its opposition to mercury.
And I mentioned at the beginning of this class the square and opposition are hard aspects and some conjunctions
and the conjunction comes into play with those outer planets with Saturn Uranus and Neptune and Pluto.
They can sit at hard or difficult or challenging when what in relation to those planets with the other
planets with the inner planets that we're going to look at first of all the conjunction is generally
considered not to be such a problem or such a challenge which is why we only see the squaring off position
here to explain that a little bit further the conjunction the nature of the energy of the conjunction
is like it's like a power center it's like a merging of the two areas of life symbolized by the planets.
And so when you have the the planet as being one of them they tend to be the major life challenges.
And so when they merge with planets like the sun and the moon they become difficult and they become
a problem that has to be resolved in some way whereas when you are talking about the inner planets the
other planets which are more a fundamental part of our being than the two of them together isn't a difficulty
in the same way.
And through these classes for now again because I want to keep it simple I'm merging together the hard
aspects.
So in this case we've got the square and the opposition.
All verminous representative I should say all of the hard aspects and I'm not going to separate the
two and I'm not going to differentiate.
Now the difference really between Moon squared mercury and Moon opposite Mercury is of course a difference
but I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible because you know the information you might have information
in astrology is so vast.
For me personally I found the easiest to build up the the knowledge and understanding step by step.
What I will say as a generalization before I begin is the often the square aspect is felt internally
as a internal challenge just something personal that we have to resolve that we sense as being inherent
in our nature whereas the opposition aspects of you think about the symbolism of opposite.
It's like two two opposing forces.
And so it often seems to come on issues related to the opposition seem to come from outside.
So somebody else in life does something to us and that's how we experience it.
There are unfortunately never any hard and fast rules with astrology you can never say this is like
this always but as a generalization you can split them up like that and say the square tends to be in
an internal sense of conflict and the opposition tends to come from an outside force if situational
person and that will always be exceptions to that.
But you can say it's generally true.
And and for these for this class in these series of classes where I'm looking at the hard aspects to
the sun and moon we get to treat them as one for now in the future we can split them up and say OK these
are the differences.
But for now we're just looking at what it means to have a hard aspect between these two planets in your
chart.
Little by little POKO Apple co.
As they say in the Spanish speaking world.
OK and so so let's run through these first few aspects relatively quickly.
Mercury's the planet of communication.
And so when you have the moon and the hard aspect to mercury it often shows some kind of issue around
communication with the mother.
And more generally in childhood when growing up problems understanding each other as
as suggested by this cartoon the theme with Moon Mercury is misunderstanding miscommunication.
Obviously in the case of this cartoon it's not directly relevant to our relationship with our mother
but it's just hopefully a memorable visual representation to say the same thing by an issue with communication.
And you know with our mothers when younger and then maybe not in our adult lives in relationships some
kind of miscommunication might be common there's a feeling of not being understood in some way relates
back to issues that we had in our childhood with the problems understanding each other.
Moody and hot aspect to Venus.
So then the symbols again.
Moon square Venus on the left of the screen Moon opposite Venus on the right.
And so what we have here is maybe a sense of what a person needs for security as shown by the moon and
what they what they need to feel safe and secure is on odds with what they find beautiful as symbolized
by Venus.
So it could show somebody who chooses marriage and security with someone who makes them feel safe but
they don't particularly excite you or you're not especially attracted to them in some way or the other
way around.
You go for people who are very attractive and very beautiful in some way you don't get your emotional
needs met through the relationship.
You remember one of the symbols for Venuses is relating to relationships.
And so there's a conflict somewhere between our our sense of what we desire in a relationship versus
what we actually need to feel safe and secure.
So these are the two symbols of the feminine principles.
So you know over in a woman's chart that could be a conflict that between her maternal nature and by
the moon and that cute little baby there against her rhotic side what she's looking for in a relationship
could be some kind of conflict that a person chooses one role over the other.
So somebody a woman might decide to play mother and then not be so interested in the relationship or
even having a sense of beauty lay in her looks not been so so concerned about that side of life and
embodying the maternal nature that or the opposite side somebody who's who's more interested in the
romance and doing so at the expense of having children because of that sense of commitment conflicts
with her desire in a relationship.
The challenge of course with all aspects is making sure we're both planets get their needs met in some
way making room for both making room for a family but not at the expense of all romantic life.
And you know this this goes equally for my kids is a woman's job.
It's probably fair to say the hard aspects to the moon and challenges with the moon in a woman's charts.
Aw.
Harder for her than it is for a guy.
And likewise with the sun representing the male principle hard aspects to the sun in a man's job more
difficult for him than they would be for a woman.
So it may be more difficult for a woman to come to terms with these hard aspects to the moon but still
everybody has all a plan.
It's all sides of that nature and a chaunce or a man still has a nature an emotional nature which he
may or may not be losing touch with but it would still be a relevant feature of his life.
So in a man's jaw he might have to choose between or feel like life forces him to choose between the
feminine principle of the the moon you know the woman that has him and makes him feel safe and secure
versus a woman who he finds incredibly attractive.
There's a real romantic connection with but but somehow through her he feels like his emotional needs
aren't being met in some way
moving onto my ass.
The mood when connected to Maz hate the symbols.
I don't actually get to slightly contradict what I said a few moments ago in that we conclude that the
conjunction here with Maz and we do that because Maw's is traditionally known as i malefic planets Leftwich
essentially enjoy realistic language meaning Bart it's never really that clear cut Maza isn't bought
as such but can show challenges when when closely connected to personal planets in a chart.
So here when we're looking up Moon Mars aspects we hot aspects we include the conjunction the square
and the opposition which we didn't do with mercury venus we didn't have the conjunction in the moon
and Mars.
Basically what you've got here is two very strong willed characters mozzies mythologically speaking
the God of Wall.
So he's connected with conflict on arguments and on.
It's not all negative it's a sense of assertion.
So we are mostly focusing on the challenging aspects of these planets here.
You know if you had moon in Moon trine Maz for example then then you would probably have a mother who
was very assertive and strong.
But no that wasn't a problem for you.
She was just a confident woman.
Whereas when it's in Haught aspect like they say this is this going to be some challenge that so you
know it's like you want it one way you mom say another way.
And this constant conflicts and arguments maybe when growing up as this cartoon nicely illustrates
maybe somebody with one of these moon Mars aspects experience the mother as being bossy in some way
or domineering or intrusive the sense of when you start to want to embody your MOS which is about being
more independent in life being more lax and more assertive exploring the world maybe maybe your mom
somehow got in the way.
Tagged along didn't like you asserting yourself you know getting in touch with your mom's essence.
There was conflicts that arose out of that.
So what can happen then if you have one of these aspects in your child is you end up attracting a person
that somehow plays out this conflict which ultimately is internal.
All of these things even when it seems to come from outside of us it's all about what's really going
on inside for us this is something in our nature.
I wouldn't say causes the events that happen in our life but there is a connection between them an element
of Synchronicity which isn't a cause and effect relationship but what's going on inside us is directly
reflected in our outside life and the experiences that happen to us.
So you know maybe maybe you end up attracting a partner who is who is incredibly independent.
You're being the moon in this and I'm wanting this deep emotional connection but something about your
in it doesn't give it you.
Maybe they maybe they have anger issues as well.
And with all of these things I think it's important to recognize the the internal nature of the dilemma.
When you see somebody with mass Moon conjunct my eyes a square miles or opposite Mars in that chart
it's saying something about their internal nature it's saying something about how part of them is looking
for safety and security wall.
Another part of that being once excitement and adventure and independence and so internal conflicts
might fast somehow through external experiences in life often particularly with the opposition aspects.
But with any of these what can happen is we embody one side of the one of the planets and somebody else
in our lives embodies the other.
So you know maybe you'll be Mars and you want to be independent and you end up attracting a clingy needy
partner or the other way round that you're the one that's looking for that deep emotional connection
and yet you have this independent angry
Moss type person that you keep attracting and it's all was an interesting experience to look for any
similarities in different relationships people that you attract into your lives over time and where
it's the common theme that that's saying something about or if it's a common theme that's a difficult
one it's saying something about internal unresolved issues.
When when you do that then well almost invariably tends to happen is the people that we me and the external
situations and difficulties somehow through some crazy magical process stop occurring.
I mean it's literally like eyes wild.
So yes moon and Mars tends to be arguments and fights with mother when young maybe even in adult life.
And maybe with other people too and so the need here is to find some way of expressing both sides of
getting your emotional closeness while recognizing that a part of you actually is very independent at
the same time.
So making sure that you embody both sides and make space in yourself of both sides so that you don't
end up only acting out one side and bringing in a person into your life who's going to embody the other
side and cause conflict and difficulties.
And so on to Moon Jupiter and Jupiter is all the planets of expansion.
It's all about everything big when Jupiter hit something in a chaw connects where it tends to exaggerate
it tends to make whatever the situation is bigger in some way for good or for ill.
Jupiter is traditionally seen as been AFAIK you know a good planet that it brings positivity and joy
and luck and all the good things which is true.
But at the same time remember that what we're talking about here are the challenging aspects.
So if you have a hard aspect square or opposition between moon and Jupiter then there may not be a major
issue in your life but this theme will be that somehow.
And what a what it could well symbolize Is that your relationship with your mother went through big
mood swings Jupiter and move in together can symbolize some think of an emotional rollercoaster that
we go just like that so.
So it may be really strong feelings of love and closeness and affection followed by feeling like you
let down in some way or betrayed in some way.
So this aspect can say something about your mother herself maybe not because Jupiter is about exploration
and adventure and excitement.
Maybe maybe she was conflicted herself between her maternal nature and her desire to be exploring the
wild adventures and some think about that an issue for her somehow it got passed on to you.
So that could be some kind of emotional rollercoaster going on with this aspect.
The moon in a child is often how a woman sees herself and in a woman's shot and in a man's shot the
Moon is often one of the ways it symbolizes is through what kind of woman he's attracted to and tends
to appear in his life.
So it could symbolize a guy who's who likes women who are exciting adventurous inspirational in some
way.
But when it's a hard aspect like this but that sense of excitement and adventure again could be in conflict
with his deeper emotional needs and desires for somebody who is a bit more grounded and settled.
And so maybe maybe in a guy's jaw they suspect isn't.
Some think in internal and integral to his nature but actually in terms of the kind of women that come
into his life it's important to remember though with all of these things all of the features and symbols
of astrology it's what they show both our nature and our external life.
And so it's not always possible easy to know whether it is going to be something that's intrinsically
felt by us or something that it's experienced in the outside world if you like through interactions
with life and other people.
Fundamentally I don't think it really matters fundamentally.
The point is that it's in our life in some way.
And so whether it is internal or external It's the same thing.
We still have to deal with it.
