Let's look now at some examples charts that highlight some of the issues that we've been talking about
with regards to the moon in the hard aspects and the examples that I'm going to use highlight the aspects
from the moon to the outer planets so to Saturn Uranus and Neptune and Pluto because if you remember
these are always the most prominent and the most challenging in a person's life.
These are really a great place to start because they can be much more evident and obvious than aspects
to say Mercury Venus which while still being relevant probably aren't as big a deal as the hard aspects
to these outer planets.
So I've got on the screen the chart for Marilyn Monroe and before I actually talk about identifying
talk about these hot aspects to the moon I think there's value in you taking a bit of time to see if
you can identify just visually on the chart the hard aspects in question.
So we've got the moon over here and it's in 19 degrees of the sign of Aquarius.
So what we're looking for is hot aspects.
That's either conjunctions squares or oppositions to the moon.
Conjunctions are pretty easy to spot because that right next to the planet in question you can see here
we've got a conjunction to Jupiter which is at 26 degrees.
So it's seven degrees away from the moon.
So this would be valid and it would be considered in all but as the as Jupiter is not one of the aspects
we're looking at in this context in a conjunction then we can ignore it for now.
So what you're looking for then is hard aspects or positions or squares to the moon with the moon being
in Aquarius.
Then we know that the opposition must be a planet in the sign Leo because Leo is the opposite sign to
Aquarius with the moon at 19 degrees then we're looking for planets in LEO between 11 degrees and 27
degrees of Leo.
And that's because if you remember for these hard aspects we cannot allow an award of 8 degrees.
So the aspect can be 8 degrees away from exact and still be valid and still be significant.
And then the signs that would be square to the Moon in Aquarius are the two signs that three away in
the zodiac from Aquarius.
And so you've got Taurus and you've got Scorpio.
So again we're looking for any planets any planets that are Saturn Uranus and Neptune and Pluto.
We're ignoring the others for now that are within 8 degrees of the moon in the signs of the Taurus or
school year.
So I invite you to pause the recording for a minute and just take the time to get used to identifying
these aspects and just seeing if you can spot what planets if any all relevant in this case.
So in Marilyn's chart there are actually two of the planets that we're interested in that fall within
these hard aspects to the moon.
We have Neptune here which is at 22 degrees of Leo or it's opposite the moon and with a three degree
orb and then dotted here we have Saturn which is at 21 degrees Scorpio.
So again a close aspect here of the square and within two degrees of the moon and the other sign up
here is toward us.
The other sign that would be square but we have nothing here.
So just those two planets are the ones that we're interested in.
Let's look first at the moon square Saturn aspect.
And if you know what they think about things like you will know that she did indeed have a very difficult
time while through a whole life actually but certainly in her childhood and upbringing and in her relationship
with her mother for both financial and mental health reasons.
My mother felt unable to look after her daughter.
She wasn't able to care for her she wasn't able to play the maternal role of nurturing that we looked
for that name.
And so my role it was placed with foster parents and actually through her childhood a whole series of
different foster parents so we see this in relation to the Saturn aspect in that Marlene certainly met
the archetype of satin through her mother.
Her mother was depressed and detached and quite cold towards There was no signs of love or that there
was no physical bonding note no touching the skin.
All of these things the moon in Haught aspect to Santan is likely to represent.
And so the way that mottling dealt with this and that's what we discussed previously when we were looking
at the moon Saturn is one of the common coping mechanisms for people with this aspect is just to shut
down emotionally feels a huge sense of rejection from her mother.
And the only way she can really deal with it is by touching herself from these feelings and this is
as a person then goes into adulthood.
Classic aspects that might get a sense of loneliness or isolation which is certainly something that
Marlene suffered from.
She found it very difficult to trust people.
It was very lonely.
She had a succession of failed relationships which included three marriages which all ended in divorce.
And while some aspects will generally reoccur in the arena of intimate relationships as we relive the
experience that we had with our mother in this case this is even more prominent and even more striking
because if you see the moon falls in the seven pounds which is the house of the of the of one to one
relationships with people.
And so this is the area of life whether Mooney's where she especially feels it the mood in the seven
times she's somebody who really needs that partnership and connection to feel emotionally safe and secure.
And yet the influence of Saturn in was that those relationships are very difficult.
I don't think she comes to terms with those feelings of rejection from childhood.
The relationships are pretty much doomed to failure or at least she's destined to be unhappy even when
in a relationship because Saturn is somehow blocking those moves needs for that deep connection to be
met.
And by way of reinforcing this theme socman is also in the fortnights which relates to our early upbringing
in our childhood.
And so having Sansone here especially as it's reinforcing the same theme in the brain and connection
to the moon really highlights the fact that her childhood growing up was was a Saturnian want it was
a cold environment where she felt isolated and quite often lonely and unhappy and depressed.
And one other thing here if you remember back to the introductory class from we looked at houses I talked
about higher the angular houses was the most important the issues of planets in angular houses which
is the first fourth seventh and 10 houses.
These are was most prominent.
These are what was come to the fore in our lives.
Most notably You can ignore issues of planets that are in these angular houses like maybe you can in
some of the other houses and this highlights a little bit about what we're saying in terms of you have
to look at the chart as a whole.
We're really only looking at the moon square Saturn here which in itself is very challenging but you
could also see from the fact the angular houses on that Saturn is in the fourth house which relates
to the early childhood conditioning and that the moon is in the seven times related to intimate relationships
that we can see a pattern forming where the coordinates on the lack of emotional connection and a nurturing
figure in childhood really plays out strongly Marlin's life and especially through romantic relationships
are signified by the seventh pauvres and as if that wasn't enough for poor old Madeline.
She also had the Moon opposite Neptune.
Neptune in the first house which also has something to say about mother on early life.
So in this case I think we can safely say that Neptune here opposite the moon represents mother's mental
instability.
She was according to the reports most likely a paranoid schizophrenic.
She spent much of her life in mental institutions.
And so this is a very Neptunian theme.
Somebody a mother who's out of touch with reality who isn't able to function in the regular physical
material world somebody who was suffering somebody who was a victim and powerless all of these being
very Neptunian.
She was sick and unable to take care of herself.
And so also of course when able to take care of my.
So she just wasn't a presence in Marilyn's life which is another possible Neptunian symbol the absence
of the son that is symbolized by the planet in contact with Neptune.
And so in some way my relating to finalize this and that she that she picked up from her mother who
was clearly quite a Neptunian figure and then Marilyn carried that forward in her own light and quite
clearly expressing that Choon herself twice.
She was admitted as self a psychiatric evaluation.
She suffered from depression.
She was a heavy drinker and also a big user of a cocktail of prescription drugs.
All of these being the lower side of Neptune and a sense of escapism she was unable to deal with reality.
And of course what makes it doubly hard and more likely to bring out the lower side of these archetypes
that the planning's represent is the fact that the two of these planets in the hard aspect to them one
alone is usually difficult enough but two is incredibly hard to have to deal with.
We can also see Neptune up play in a more positive light in Marilyn's life through very successful career.
Neptune is also a symbol for film and television all kinds of artistic mediums but certainly film and
TV all prominent amongst those Neptunes in the first time.
So this is the house of self-image and what we project immediately out there into the world.
So she was able to to create and project this self-image of beauty and animal almost the real quality.
She was literally seen as a goddess by many people almost like a fantasy faker almost not quite real
which is all very Neptunian in itself.
But again that Chuen is in one of the angular houses in the first house and so it's very prominent on
the floor of her life and being ahead and connected so strongly with the moon.
It could possibly suggest that as an adult she wasn't really in touch with her sense of being a woman.
Despite this image that she presented to the world Neptune in the hives can create a sense of illusion
which was very strong and enable her to be so successful.
But most likely away from the limelight.
There was a real lack of clarity about who she really is and I like being in touch with her deep feminine
emotional nature.
So that's Marylands chance in relation to these hard aspects to the moon.
Hopefully that Stuy to give you an idea of how these things actually play out in a person's life.
Let's move on to another chart.
That of Oscar Wilde the Irish playwright again before I talk about this chart myself maybe taking a
little time yourself to find the moon and to look for the aspects to it.
I'll just give you a little start here by saying that the moon is in Leo.
So we're looking for any planets any of the outer planets that are in the signs all Taurus Scorpio or
Aquarius because again those are the signs there are three and six degrees three and six signs of the
zodiac away from Leo.
And so those are the signs from which that would be
Squier's are all positions.
So pulls the tape now and spend as long as you need to.
Just having a look for these aspects and trying to get more of a feel for spotting them for yourself.
Ok so here we have Oscar's moon in 15 degrees of Leo.
So we're looking for any planets from seven degrees to 23 degrees on the relevant signs because again
that would make an 8 degree old.
And if we go this way we get to the site in Scorpio and we can see the mercury is at 13 degrees Mercury
is square to the moon.
So that does have some relevance in his life but not an aspect that we're interested in right now.
We go to the opposite side of Aquarius and there's nothing here.
And then we go up to to us and we can see that indeed we've got the planet Uranus also up 15 degrees
of the sun toward us.
So this is an exact aspect both of the planets are in the same degree.
This is what is known as a positive aspect which essentially just means that the aspect is within 1
degree of being exact.
If you want to get more specific you have the minutes start here.
So the moon is 15 degrees and two minute simply.
And Uranus is 15 degrees and 33 minutes of Taurus.
So take away two from thirty three and you've got all but thirty one minutes which is basically one
half of a degree.
So very close and meaning that it will be something very prominent indeed in Oscar's life and in date
so Tunder his mother Jane wild.
She was certainly not your ordinary 19th century mother.
She published poetry for the young Guyland movement and her work was all about pro Irish independence
and very much anti British onto the British Royal.
She was a rebel essentially.
I remember that's one of the key symbols symbolism of you and us is a sense of being outside of the
mainstream.
Being a rebel being different doing things your own way.
And she certainly was.
Particularly when you think about the conservative times that she was growing up in mid 19th century
Ireland she was a social campaigner advocating for women's rights back when basically not many people
were doing not well thinking that women should have any rights.
She was radical and she was anti establishment.
All of these being very Uranian themes.
I don't know too much about his private personal upbringing but given the nature of her work and how
focused she was on my campaigning there's probably a fat chance the Oscars mother spends a lot of time
focusing on this work and and maybe not so much on her role as being a mother certainly in comparison
to what the women of that talk may be correct.
And so as being somewhat detached or inconsistent in terms of her nurturing abilities what we do know
is that something of an unusual early life often a Moon Uranus signification.
He was educated at a whole room until he was nine years old and so would no direct being especially
influenced by the radical nature of his mother and her beliefs and reviews of society.
His mother taught him to be independent.
He certainly inherited radicalism and rebellious nuns.
He was very much a nonconformist himself.
And through his plays he was known for portraying an individual's alienation from society.
And certainly the sense of alienation or detachment is very much a human as quality.
He had a sense that he didn't quite fit in.
He never really felt a part of the society and the people that he hung around with.
I think it's fair to say based on the history of his life and also looking at the astrology chart that
this is all related to his upbringing his early life and what he picked up from his mother.
And one of the things about the moon we can see in the sign of Leo Leo is an incredibly creative sign.
It's the sign off the for somebody who craves attention who loves being in the limelight.
And remember it's a fire sign so there's a need to be special that and also express this need to be
special on this desire to be admired and adored which is such a LEO trait through his works of art through
his plays even though at the same time he always felt like an outsider who didn't quite fit in which
is signified by this very close square to Uranus.
And let's move on to the final example.
Cha for these moon aspects.
Singer Karen Carpenter famous of course for being one half of the Carpenters and also famous for suffering
from anorexia and eventually dying from their condition.
Again take a moment for yourself to take a look at the movie and see what aspects we've got going on
here.
I won't mention anything you can look for yourself to find the degree in the sign that the moon is in
and then work out way you need to look which are the signs you need to look out to look for these square
opposition and conjunction aspects
so pause the recording now and take a quick look.
So hopefully you spotted the one aspect that we're interested in here.
We got the moon down here at 18 degrees of Leo and very easy to spot this fall on Pluto right next to
it.
So a conjunction at 16 degrees so two degrees of orb which is a very close conjunction.
No other aspects that we're interested in at this time.
You can see that there are two planets opposite both the moon and Pluto.
Here we've got Jupiter at 20 degrees of Aquarius and Mercury at 21 which of course are significant but
we try to keep it simple for the time being and so we're just going to focus on the the Moon conjunct
Pluto.
Karen Carpenter's life was obviously a very interesting and compelling one for many people incredibly
tragic one.
And certainly there was a strong Pluto influence in her life for many years a number of biographers
and filmmakers tried to tell Karen's story but were constantly thwarted and blocked by the family who
were understandably grieving the loss of their daughter but also as it emerged were also very controlling
about how they were going to be viewed and none more so than Karen's Mother Agnes was a film that came
out in 1989 called the Karen Carpenter story written by a guy called Barrymore who read immerged was
basically block to every turn from telling the true story of Karen's life.
And what emerged was the real core of her issues and at the core of the eating disorder which ultimately
claimed her life was Karen's desperate desire for her mother's attention.
In this film every time that Karen's mother saw something she didn't like or didn't reflect well on
her she would insist on the scene being changed been rewritten.
And this is one example of the controlling mother figure that Karen suffered from for her entire life
a more recent book by a guy called Randy Schmetz explained the emotional problems that were the real
root of Karen's eating disorder were all about her relationship with her mother and how her mother was
completely unable to show the love and affection that Karen desperately wanted and needed despite being
adored by so many people in the public arena.
It was the mother's love that Karen was desperate for and never received.
What the Moon Pluto here suggests is not necessarily that her mother didn't love her but was simply
unable to express her feelings.
You know Pluto is all about that dark side of our nature.
And suppressing some thing.
And so you know it seems that Karen's mother had intense personal emotional problems herself which prevented
her from really getting in touch with her maternal loving feelings towards her daughter and instead
came out in a very controlling and manly manipulative way and very Plutonian.
The picture that emerged when this guy Randy Schmetz was writing his book when he spoke to loads and
loads of Karen's colleagues and from so many of them all said the same thing that basically the Carpenter
family was was overshadowed by this really controlling matriarchal figure Agnes who was incredibly concerned
with would appearances.
And we can see that in the chart in the Moon conjunct Pluto is in the sign leo.
So so here there's a real desire to be loved and adored in the sign Leo.
But when the lower side of it comes out as shown by the influence of Pluto it's an overconcern with
what others think about you.
And so remember the moon shows something about our mother in law and so this indicates what was going
on for Agnes and her own issues as well as what Karen then picked up and took on in her own life.
Karen's Mother was actually known as the Dragon Lady by many of the people in the music business that
Karen worked with to give one example of a mother is incredibly controlling nature.
Karen was engaged to a guy called Tom Burris who was a lot older than her.
And as the wedding day approached Karen learned that Tom had actually had a vasectomy.
And before they met but he decided not to tell her.
Even though he knew she was desperate to have children.
So when Karen found this out she decided to call the wedding off told her mother and her mother said
no chance or that or to go through with the wedding because all of these friends and family were traveling
for it or had been paid for and he would just look bad if she was to call the wedding off.
And incredibly Karen went through with it just because her mom told her to.
No indication of controlling manipulating mother figure that had all this power over Karen.
She was scared of her mother as is often the case with Moon Pluto.
And so all of these unexpressed issues while her mother initially had in her own life and then Karen
picks up through her relationship with her mother she was simply unable to deal with.
So she buried because that's what Pluto does.
It's the feelings and emotions are so intense.
There would have been a love hate relationship with her mother.
Extreme intensity put She simply couldn't deal with her own emotional issues and all the stuff that
she picked up from having such a controlling overbearing mother.
And so she suppressed them all.
And it's fair to say that this action along with the desperate desire for love and affection from her
mother which didn't come was all a huge part of her eating disorder which was basically a way of control.
Another Plutonian theme the moon symbolizing in this case the body and Pluto control control over the
body as a way of keeping up Bay all of those intense emotional experiences which were just too much
for Karen to deal with because that's Plutos nature great intensity and often huge amount of fear over
over facing them essentially.
It's that sense of being aware of one's dark side and not wanting to get in touch with it.
And when a person does that when this Pluto energy is suppressed rather than face then it has to come
out in another area of life and I is going to be destructive in some way.
And in Karen's case sadly that happened through her eating disorder which simply related back to this
terrible relationship with her mother and the lack of nurturing care and loving connection with mother
that the moon side of us so desperately needs.
But when in a hard aspect to Pluto is something that we don't always get.
And then if in adulthood it's not it's not faced and dealt with then it's a recipe for a very unhappy
life in one way or another.
And one final short little story to illustrate this again in Karen's life was the
Eventually she did go into therapy and she was several months into her therapy course when her therapist
asked her parents to come along to the session and to simply tell Karen that they loved her and and
agonises response.
Karen's mom's response was firstly to tell off the therapist for addressing her by her first name and
then she told him that this was not how their family resolve the issues and that was it.
She couldn't she couldn't even seen her daughter in therapy with this terrible eating disorder that
was killing her.
She couldn't even then tell her that she loved Karen.
So as you can see from these few examples hard aspects from these outer planets to the moon can be incredibly
difficult things to deal with in one's life.
And while certainly in the case of Marilyn Monroe and Karen Carpenter in the case of these examples
that people who didn't deal with the issues at all and suffered and both died premature deaths because
of them.
But it's also important to point out that it doesn't have to be that way all of these issues in a chart
can be overcome.
There's nothing that can be dealt with if one is willing to go through that process and go on that journey
of facing whatever needs to be face and making those changes.
So that's all I wanted to say about the moon for now and in the next class we will take a look at the
sun.
